Hi, I'm Heather Stephens. I'm a marketing coach and website designer who quit marketing for an entire year and discovered something remarkable.
In 2024, my life unraveled in slow motion.
- We lost my father-in-law to sudden brain cancer.
- My daughter had a high-risk pregnancy.
- I received an ADHD diagnosis at fifty.
- Three of my key teammates left.
- Our dog passed away the week of Christmas.
And in the middle of all of it, I stopped marketing.
- No social media.
- No weekly emails.
- No paid ads.
- No pushing visibility.
Surprisingly, my business stayed afloat instead of crashing like I feared.
In fact, during that time my:
- Organic search traffic grew 170% year over year
- Email automations continued nurturing leads
- Referral relationships kept sending clients
- Recurring revenue stabilized cash flow
- I maintained a profit and paid myself consistently the entire year
Year-over-year stats from Google Analytics
This happened even when:
- I wasn't publishing weekly blog posts.
- I wasn't posting consistently.
- I wasn't driving traffic from email.
When I had energy, I updated and deepened old evergreen content. Google rewarded that. AI tools now cite that same content as trusted sources.
But here's the key: It wasn't just the blogging, or the relationships, or the email nurture sequences, or even the recurring revenue that saved me. It was the fact that all four assets were working together.
Real Results
Lucy: From 3 subscribers to 651 in 30 days.
Lucy came to me with a great business and almost no list growth. Three to five new subscribers a month, for months. After working together to build her content system and lead magnet strategy, her list exploded. 651 new subscribers in a single month. That's not a typo. The system works.

Pillar 1
Protect Your Peace
Design marketing around your real energy and capacity.
Most marketing advice starts with "what to do." But if you're already burnt out, adding more to-dos makes things worse.
The coaches who crash hardest are the ones who build marketing plans that require 100% capacity to maintain. When life happens (as it will), the whole system falls apart because it was built on hustle, not sustainability.
What to do instead:
Before you build any marketing plan, map your real capacity. Not your ideal, everything-goes-right capacity. Your actual, honest-with-yourself capacity.
- How many hours per week can you realistically spend on marketing? (Not "should." Can.)
- What days and times work best for your energy? (Morning person? Night owl? Creative Tuesdays but braindead Fridays?)
- What days, times, weeks are OFF? Build rest into the plan before you build the plan. My own schedule: Week 4 of every month is completely off.
The key insight
Built-in rest weeks are not laziness. They're strategic. I work 20 to 30 hours per week, take 12 weeks off per year, and still run a profitable business.
Your action step
Create a Capacity Calendar for the next quarter. Block your OFF weeks first. Then fit your marketing into what's left, not the other way around. Honoring your capacity is non-negotiable.

Pillar 2
Express Clearly
So clear a stranger understands how you help in 10 seconds.
Most coaches struggle to explain what they do in a way that makes strangers say "I need that." They use insider language, vague promises, or try to serve everyone.
It's the Curse of Knowledge. You're so deep in your expertise that you forget how to explain it simply. If someone lands on your website and can't understand how you help within 10 seconds, they leave.
What to do instead:
Build a 10-Second Message using this formula:
I help [specific person] [achieve specific outcome] without [specific pain point].
Then go deeper on your ideal client. Not just demographics, psychographics. What do they Google at 2am? What do they complain about to friends? What have they already tried that didn't work?
The key insight
When your message is dialed in, everything gets easier. Your content practically writes itself because you know exactly who you're talking to. Your sales conversations feel natural because the right people are showing up. Your confidence increases because you're not trying to be everything to everyone.
Your action step
Write three versions of your 10-Second Message using the formula above. Test them on a friend outside your industry. The one they understand instantly? That's your message.
A
Pillar 3
Attract Magnetically
Build evergreen assets instead of chasing short-lived visibility.
Here's the math no one talks about:
That Instagram post you spent an hour crafting? It lives for about 48 hours. Then it disappears.
If you've been posting five times a week for three years, that's 780 pieces of content that no longer work for you.
You were taught to spend effort. You were never taught to invest it.
Spending requires constant energy to maintain visibility. Investing compounds your visibility exponentially.
What to do instead:
Build three core assets that work without you:
- Cornerstone Content. Blog posts, YouTube videos, or podcast episodes that bring traffic from search for years. I have posts from 2016 that still generate clients today.
- A Lead Magnet. A free resource that converts visitors into email subscribers while you sleep. Not a generic PDF, something that solves one specific problem for your ideal client.
- A Welcome Sequence. Automated emails that build trust and introduce your offer. So when someone finds your blog at 2am, your system is still working at 2am.
How these compound:
Each asset you build makes the whole system stronger. Unlike social posts, these don't decay quickly. A blog post that ranks in Google or is cited by AI brings visitors every day. A lead magnet captures a percentage of those visitors. A welcome sequence converts a percentage of those subscribers into clients. All running while you're offline.
Your action step
Identify three questions your ideal clients are searching for right now. Write one cornerstone blog post that thoroughly answers the most urgent one. That single piece of content can bring you leads for years.

Pillar 4
Connect Authentically
Create trust-based relationships, not performance-based attention.
Getting someone on your email list is not enough. If you never nurture them, the list is useless.
Most coaches either never email their list, or only email when they're selling something. Both kill trust.
Here's the thing about email nurture:
Some people on my list purchase almost immediately. They find a blog post, download a resource, read a few emails, and they're ready.
But one of my highest-paying clients? She subscribed to my email list and didn't buy for 754 days. Over two years of reading my emails, building trust, and engaging with my content before she was ready.
If I had stopped emailing after a month, or only emailed when I was selling something, I would have lost her.
You never know who's reading your emails and quietly getting closer to ready. That's why consistency matters more than any single campaign. And that's why a nurture system is one of the highest-ROI marketing activities you can build.
What to do instead:
Build a 7-email welcome sequence that does the warming for you:
- Email 1: Deliver your lead magnet plus one quick-start tip
- Email 2: A quick win related to the lead magnet topic
- Email 3: Your story (builds connection and trust)
- Email 4: A common mistake your audience makes (positions your expertise)
- Email 5: A client story showing what's possible
- Email 6: Your offer (clear, confident, no apology)
- Email 7: Soft close plus transition to regular nurture
Beyond the welcome sequence:
Keep showing up. Email your list regularly with valuable content, not just when you're selling. Your newsletter is your relationship with your audience. The person who becomes your best client this year might be someone who subscribed quietly six months ago.
Your action step
If you have a lead magnet but no welcome sequence, that's your highest-priority build. Map the 7 emails using the structure above. Even a simple version will outperform silence. Commit to a regular email rhythm, weekly or biweekly, because the sale you make in month 8 comes from the emails you sent in months 1 through 7.

Pillar 5
Earn Sustainably
Build continuity revenue so you're not starting at zero every month.
Here's a question most coaches never think to ask: Do you have recurring revenue that covers your recurring expenses?
Think about it. You have bills that show up every single month whether you sell anything or not. Your software subscriptions, your email platform, your website hosting, your insurance, your rent or mortgage. Those don't pause when you take a week off or have a slow sales month.
But most coaches have zero recurring revenue. Every dollar they earn comes from a one-time sale. Every month starts at zero. That means cash flow will always be a source of stress, no matter how many clients they book this month, because next month the counter resets.
What to do instead:
Yes, you need your core offer. That's the work you love doing and the bread and butter of your revenue. But alongside that core offer, you need a continuity revenue stream, something that generates predictable, recurring income every single month.
This could look like:
- A monthly membership or community where clients get ongoing support, resources, and connection
- A maintenance or retainer agreement where past clients pay monthly for continued access to your expertise
- A subscription service that delivers ongoing value: templates, tools, coaching calls, or content
The magic number:
Figure out what your fixed monthly business expenses are. That's your first continuity revenue target. When your recurring revenue covers your recurring expenses, something shifts. The desperation to sell every month disappears. You can make decisions from strategy instead of survival. You can take a vacation without the math falling apart.
If starting with all your expenses is a high number and overwhelms you, focus on covering one bill. Can you cover your internet bill with recurring revenue? Then maybe your internet bill and insurance, etc. Make growing your recurring revenue a game.
Why this matters:
Continuity revenue was the single biggest factor that kept my business stable during the year I stopped marketing. While I wasn't actively selling, recurring income from maintenance plans and my membership community kept cash flow stable every single month. That's what gave me the space to heal without my business collapsing.
63% of my customers are repeat buyers who started with smaller products. When you build the right ecosystem, clients don't just buy once, they stay. That ongoing relationship becomes the financial foundation of a peaceful business.
Your action step
Add up your fixed monthly business expenses, every subscription, tool, and recurring bill. That's your baseline. Now ask: do I have any offer that generates recurring revenue? If not, that's the most important gap to fill. Even a small membership or retainer model that covers your baseline expenses changes everything about how your business feels.
